Google Launches Google TV Website with Details; Apple May Lose

Google today has launched an extensive site for their Google TV. With the launch of the site, so developers are getting ready to announce their apps for Google TV. There still no price or date known but the site is giving a good look at some features especially when considered against the new Apple TV (will Apple lose the war?).

So far, we’ve seen announcements from Twitter, Pandora, CNBC, Vevo and Netflix. Watch the embedded video and look at the applications, you will be able to expand your TV in any way you want using these applications (This is the real difference between Google & Apple's TV) but Apple can also do this, they just need to enable it and they better do it soon before the cameras go away.

Google will also allows users with iOS & Android devices to serve as a remote for their Google TV including voice search & the ability to link multiple phones with a single Google TV. Also as noticed by CrunchGear, you will be able to make video calls from your Google TV, yes the same as FaceTime but on a big screen. It will even have an AirPlay feature called flinging, which will differentiate itself by flinging whole websites and not just the certain type of video content playable by Apple's TV.

Windows Phone 7 in NYC on October 11th; T-Mobile There Too [CONFIRMED]

There was a lot of uncertainty around Microsoft's event, if you still have any doubt in your mind, we'll remove it now. Microsoft will unveil Windows Phone 7 in the US (NYC) on Oct. 11th. Engadget has discovered a Microsoft events calendar that may point to October 11th as the launch date of WP7.

For people asking about the carrier, AT&T won't be launching those handsets alone, T-Mobile is there too. The event stats "an exclusive Windows Phone 7 Worldwide Launch event for our customers" at 3:30 PM EST. Of course, we will be covering the event (not live), so stay tuned!

BitTorrent App for iPhone Hits the App Store [Updated]

Apple has officially approved the first application that makes it possible to manage the download of Torrent files directly to your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new BitTorrent app called IS Drive. The app is intended as a tool for managing ImageShack’s torrent download service.

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that shares the bandwidth load for large file transfers between large pools of users. Apple has always blocked such apps for fear of allowing illegal activity that could undermine its iTunes business, this approval comes after Apple published a new set of guidelines, which provided an opportunity for many developers to take advantage of this (e.g. GV connect and GV Mobile+).

The developer of the app is aware that the description has deliberately avoided mentioning the word "Torrent", describing the app as useful only to manage an account ImageShack Drive. IS Drive is currently selling for $4.99.

GreenPois0n Jailbreak for iOS 4.1 is “Almost Done”

We have a lil’ update for all those waiting for GreenPois0n jailbreak tool based on SHAtter exploit to jailbreak all devices on iOS 4.1 forever. Few days ago, ZekeFSM has Cut off a big distance to meet with Chornic Dev Team member p0sixninja to deliver him a new Apple TV. In the meeting, they took about lots of things including jailbreaking Apple TV, putting it in DFU mode and also talked about the jailbreak tool.

ZekeFSM cut off the distance and came back from the trip with no much secrets, but at least he could see the tool. He mentioned that it's “Almost Done”, of course we know that pod2g the ex-Chronic Team member has confirmed that tool coming out in few days. In meantime, all you have to do is to sit tight, be patient and stay tuned! [Thanks FSM]

Hackers Are Working on Unlocking Baseband 05.14.02 for iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1

Here's a piece of good news! Last week, we told you that Unlock for iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1 on 05.14.02 baseband is being delayed because both Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team are busy developing the jailbreak tool (based on SHAtter exploit) for all devices running iOS 4.1. The good one is that basband hacker Sherif Hashim has just confirmed to us that he is working on crashing baseband 05.14.02.

Sherif Hashem is a trusted member worked with the dev-team to crash baseband 05.13.04 on iOS 4 before which used in Ultrasn0w 0.93. So, if he could successfully crash 05.14.02 baseband, we will see unlock soon. By the way, there's a hacker called Clayton Braasch said that he found 4 crashes to unlock baseband 05.14.02, but this is 99.99% fake (as confirmed before), so don't get your hopes up about this hacker. As usual, we will keep you updated.

Update 1: Well, Sherif Hashim apologized to Clayton Braash and now I think they are both working on finding crashes to unlock baseband 05.14.02, hope they get it as soon as possible. Here's the potential unlock found by Braash in a video,

The BlackBerry Playbook Really Exists

Last week we told you that RIM unveiled BlackBerry Playbook to compete with Apple's iPad. I saw some posts spreading on the web saying "The BlackBerry PlayBook Doesn't Exist" but the fact is it really exists. Below you can see a real RIM’s Playbook prototype totally reviewed and compared with the iPad.

The Size
This thing is tiny in comparison to the iPad, just take a look at the picture below.

I am not sure that I am a fan of the size, it just isn’t quite big enough to feel more useful that the iPhone yet far too small to feel like a good laptop substitution.

The Screen
The screen is amazing on this device, there is absolutely no glare, it has a very paper like quality to it. It doesn’t matter what kind of light you have it in, no reflections or glare. That though is a major problem because this device needs some light – well a lot of light. In the model that I am testing the backlight either is broken or eludes this testers ability to turn it on.

The resolution of the screen is also very poor, the pixel count looks high (print[er] quality even) but the graphics look like an iPhone app running at 2x mode on the iPad – just not good enough.

The Build Quality
Overall the build is rather interesting – the device almost feels like it has some kind of cloth tape wrapping on it. It feels very rigid, about as rigid as 3 pieces of cardboard perhaps but I am just guessing here. There is still a lot of work to be done though as these three things really bug me right now:

* The screen is not perfectly centered.
* The device is not perfectly squared on the corners.
* The cloth tape like material shows it seems all over the place.

This though I have to remember is a prototype and one would assume that all these things will be fixed by the time the Playbook hits production.

Battery Life
I have had the screen on non-stop (how do you turn it off?) and it has been connected to Wi-Fi the entire time the battery life has not budget from 75% in the past 58 hours of testing. Very impressive.

The Weight
This thing weighs nothing, again it weighs about the same amount as three pieces of cardboard with tape on it. Honestly if they can keep it this weight when it hits production then I am sold.

The OS
This OS looks really swell, which is about all that I can say about it. I cannot for the life of me get the device to respond or do anything for that matter, it is stuck with the app switching screen being shown. In talking with someone who did not deny to me that they are a RIM executive (perhaps the CEO) said that it only works if you have a Blackberry and not a crappy iPhone. So it appears that RIM has done an impressive job of locking up the OS unless it detects that the owner also has a Blackberry – kudos to RIM on the feat.

Overall
Without being able to test the OS it is hard to say just how good this device is. What I can say is the the battery life, anti-reflective coatings on the screen and the weight of this device are highly impressive. If they keep these features in the production model it will kill the iPad.
